Colored pencil is my medium. I love the long slow process of observing the picture as it gradually reveals itself, layer by layer, on paper. The wonderful thing about colored pencil is that it can mimic so many other media, or be used in concert with other media to give a totally different look according to what the artist wants to achieve. You could literally spend an entire artistic career pushing the boundaries of the possible with this most simple of materials.
Most of my subjects are detailed close-ups, usually of people - or plants - or even both! I am a long term resident of Japan, having spent the last few years in Nagasaki Prefecture, and I take a lot of inspiration from the natural beauty of the area. With Japanese gardens designed to ensure that something will be in bloom every month of the year, I never run out of interesting material. |
